National Visit Someone Day - Maybe Not So Uplifting

This article is in today's Globe and Mail - I could make a link or do a bunch of stuff but then the link might disappear or some other misfortune. So, I cut and pasted it.

Perhaps we should have a national visit someone day - or a visit anyone at all day: drop in on a stranger. I have dragged the odd stranger home as a child and perhaps that was not such a bad thing.

SANDY RUN, S.C. — Mary Sue Merchant died of natural causes in a tightly locked house on 25 acres in this small South Carolina community, with only a dog for company. Now her small town is reflecting on why no one noticed for 18 months.

Nobody knew the reclusive widow was gone — not even when the house was sold for back taxes while her decomposing body lay inside. Some time later, the lonely dog died of thirst in the same room.

“We didn't know this lady existed,” Sheriff Thomas Summers said.

Only after the 72-year-old woman's body was found last week did it occur to neighbours they hadn't seen her in a while. And some wonder whether they've lost a fundamental connection to small-town life.

“We've lost the community,” said Rev. Neil Flowers, who plans to talk about Ms. Merchant on Sunday at Beulah United Methodist Church, a few kilometres from where Ms. Merchant died. “We do our own thing. We lead busy lives. We go and go and go ... and stay within our comfort zone.”

By all accounts, Ms. Merchant and her husband kept to themselves. They had no children. The sheriff and coroner say one neighbour told them David Merchant was once a prison guard who feared retribution from former inmates — but officials couldn't confirm if he worked for the state.

David Merchant died in October, 1985 at age 53, and his widow apparently lost touch with her older sister years ago, said Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth, who's trying to determine the woman's last name and track her down. A sister-in-law who tried to call — once — found the phone disconnected and assumed Ms. Merchant had gotten a cell phone, Mr. Porth said. Through the coroner, the woman declined to speak.

“It's a sad tragedy this lady had absolutely nobody who cared enough to check on her — very sad,” the sheriff said.

His deputies check on about 200 senior citizens monthly in this county of less than 15,000, just south of Columbia in central South Carolina. “But we have to know they're there,” he said.

Sandy Run, which lacks even a traffic light, is an unincorporated community: a wide spot in the road that drivers could miss if they blink. It's the kind of place where locals can usually be counted on to say that everybody knows everybody else.

But safety nets for seniors who live alone failed in Ms. Merchant's case, or didn't exist. Authorities believe she didn't attend church. Her only prescribed medicine was for glaucoma, so she wasn't on any medical check list.

Many older people rely on family to check in on them, especially in rural areas, said Mary Beth Fields, aging services co-ordinator for the area.

“You'd hope neighbours would call,” she said.

Mail should've been a red flag. But Ms. Merchant had a post office box, so no mail piled up for neighbours or a carrier to notice. Her electricity was cut off in February, 2008 after three months of unpaid bills.

Meanwhile, the brick ranch home sat partly obscured by trees and brush from the road, Ms. Merchant's white four-door Chevy parked in front and a faded “Beware of Dog” sign on a telephone pole.

Four days after Merchant's body was discovered with a loaded .38-calibre revolver beneath her pillow, neighbour Ed Spradley heard the news from a reporter. He said he never talked to Ms. Merchant, but realized it had been a while since her car had moved.

Across the street, neighbour Tonya Craven said if she'd known Ms. Merchant was all alone, she'd have checked on her. But she said they spoke only once when Ms. Craven's dog ran away.

Ms. Merchant fed and cared for about 15 wild dogs, so Ms. Craven wanted to see if her dog had joined the pack. “She was very generous to them,” Ms. Craven said.

While talking with a reporter, it occurred to Ms. Craven she hadn't seen those dogs in some time.

Ms. Merchant's unpaid property taxes led to her discovery.

When she didn't pay a $234 (U.S.) bill in January, 2008, the county mailed delinquency notices to her post office box, which came back as undeliverable. The property, worth about $160,000 according to county records, was sold Dec. 1, 2008, for $20,000, said county administrator Lee Prickett.

The buyer, local real estate agent Thomas Kohn, did not return messages seeking comment.

No one from the county walked the property before selling it. Mr. Prickett said that's considered trespassing because owners in debt have a year to pay.

But authorities say Mr. Kohn noticed Ms. Merchant's car never moved, so he asked deputies to check.

Officially, it's only assumed the remains are Ms. Merchant's. Dental records are being checked before she is buried beside her husband in a prepaid plot in Newberry. An autopsy Friday determined she died of natural causes, though specifics are unknown due to the condition of the remains, said Mr. Porth. How long the dog — breed undetermined — lived without its owner is unknown; there was plenty of dog food in the house, but no water, Mr. Porth said.

Becky Rucker, owner of the local florist for 30 years, said she vaguely remembers David Merchant, but has been trying to recall what Mary Sue Merchant looked like.

“It's so sad. It makes me feel bad for our community,” she said. “In this day, we're supposed to be out of everybody's business, but I think sometimes that goes too far.”

Ireland and Rogers and Fido

Hi -

I was working in Northern Ireland a few weeks ago and dropped into a cellphone store while walking the streets of Belfast. What a shock. I figured things would cost about what I pay here and that calling Canada would be expensive.

I bought a 'pay as you go' phone for 6 dollars (yes, six dollars) and a calling plan for 12 dollars. Calls to Canada are 4 cents per minute from anywhere in Europe or Australia. Local calls are 6 cents per minute and incoming calls are free of charge. Unlimited text messages - as in there is no charge for texting at all.

When my 12 dollars of prepay is used up or runs down I can add more money to my account at any gas station or convenience store.

Shock and despair and a version of disappointment set in as I walked from the store and back to the hotel. I pay about $70 per month for local calls with Fido and am charged fro every text message. Near as I can tell - Fido and Telus and Bell have Canadians stuck firmly in the stone age of wireless communication.

Ireland

Hello - it has been a while.

I am in Belfast for a few days photographing a collection of Lisle and Scott golfwear. The Royal County Down was closed for a day so we could have free run of the place and what a spectacular course - Tiger Woods has the course record: I think a 64 or something.

The Speech

I love a good speech: a great speech I will likely remember for a lifetime. Though it seems the current Canadian Prime MInister has a thing for purloined speech - the greater sin is poor choice. Steal from the best - we are judged by what we steal.

Complex Flavour

Wine offers an adult palette a complex array of flavour that is pleasurable through and through. The nose inhales and the mind deciphers.

Fine balsamic vinegar does a similar trick. Simple pleasure with enriching results - great balsamic. Ask the guys at The Cheese Boutique in Toronto for some help choosing from the hundreds of balsamics they have in stock: from an everyday balsamic to something very special for precious occasions.

1,000 Words

OK - my friend Keri and I were talking about weddings and I had a thought. If I was getting married again I would hie a journalist: not a photojournalist - a real journalist.

A journalist to write the story of the day and the story of our love.

We were lucky - one of our guests wrote a nice online description of our wedding and this is something I really treasure.

Desire

Most things are based on desire. I show up at a wedding armed with desire and apprehension. The fuel for the day.

Growing up there is meter in conversation - so and so and this and that and who and with whom. Desire and life. Making dinner, making friends and watching every little thing develop.

Here is a recent picture - desire. I wanted them to have a single memento of the perfect day. A union before the people that matter most - parents and family.

Belief

If you know me well - you know I am not a big believer: more of an evangelical secularist. But I believe in love and that means I believe in you.

Baba O'Riley on The Great Island

Hi - I was in Newfoundland for a rip-roaring affair. The tremendous wedding of a couple that reminded me of all the best aspects of some of the best people I know.

The wedding was at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist in St. John's. A huge place - the largest east of Montreal. Glorious really.
The groom understands hospitality and the ceremony was followed with TWO receptions: first an afternoon affair at Get Stuffed and then on to The Rooms for dancing and the most resplendent seafood buffet I have ever imagined.

Good Friends

There are friends, friends of convenience and then there are good friends. Good friends are glad to see you and make you feel better about yourself and the day. Here is Ivan - I saw him yesterday on the street with his wife. Ivan is a good friend.

Feeling Good

I feel good about Canada. Very good. I like it that my parents get proper medical care. I want everyone in the world to have that overpowering sense of security I feel.

Canada. Very good.

This from a guy that had dinner with Tommy Douglas in 1982 and had not a clue how great a man he was.

Updated - procrastinator

The truth - I tell it. Character flaws - I have a few. Procrastination being only one. After a while - I have updated the website - have a look and let me know how I did.

Double shame on me because I had my web designer make a site that was extra easy to update and still I go wayward.

The Update of Things

Hello -

I have been busy and inactive all at once. The weather is really turned and we have taken up cheese as a semi-hobby. A weekly trip to the cheese boutique and a consultation with the fromagerists and away we go.

And, weddings and pictures: lots. A nice show at Jet Fuel and a few visits with friends making pictures and dinner all at once.

Jet Fuel all Over

Another year - April first will mark sixteen years since the shop opened - and, there is always a party. This year the theme is sweet sixteen.

We rounded up sixteen sixteens for a photo session and the results will be displayed writ large at the birthday party. Everyone is welcome and traditionally thousands - yes thousands - of people show up. There are sixteen kegs of beer tapped up and ready to go.

The Great Hood

I like good food. Simple food - fresh and well prepared - a luxury everyone should have opportunity to enjoy. Cooking kind of goes hand in hand with my love for delicacy. As a younger man I owned a few restaurants and worked in some of the finest eating establishments in Canada. This experience influenced a few of my decisions when planning our new kitchen. I knew that - even more than the stove - the ventilation is key to cooking with confidence.
Proper ventilation allows you to cook fish and aromatic dished without worrying too much about the odors living forever in the furniture. Ventilation allows you to grill meats at extremely high heat and sear in the juices and flavour while not setting off the smoke alarms.
We have great ventilation - a vent-a-hood purchased at Caplan's appliances permits our professional quality Dacor range to really rocket along and deliver fantastic steaks. I love steak. This hood was worth every penny and adds immeasurably to the pleasure of making dinner - stress free.
Here are  few snaps from the ridiculous meal I prepared this evening. My wife is away so I can abandon all pretense of finesse and have meat and potato.

Happy Birthday Nervosa

Our friend Karin had a fabulous birthday party on Saturday night. There was a storm in Toronto - well a Toronto storm which means no storm but lots of snow - and we all converged on a small Yorkville restaurant - Cafe Nervosa - the food was great and I met many of Karin's friends.

Karin is a yoga instructor and world traveler and living a very fulfilling life as evidenced by the many interesting people. Alfredo and Karin - they make a great couple.

Deep Desire

Sometimes we want things for ourselves and sometimes for other people - here is a bride that wanted a beautiful snowy wedding. She is not the type to ask for much but this she wanted - so: this is what happened - thankfully.

Deserving

My wife and I lived in a large loft-style studio space for the past 6 years - this is where I would meet clients, have dinner parties, do studio portraits and magazine spreads - it was always changing and the 'live/work' of it all usually balanced in the 'work' direction.

So - we moved. I still have studio space but now - after a 4 month renovation - we have a red and white kitchen.

Participation

A lot of times we just stand back and sometimes we participate. The participation brings the favoured image - this is where the heart and the head collide. Photographs - editing is kind of a poetry - the quiet reflection in the afterglow of an intense emotion.

The More the Better...

That more knowledge is better is almost always true - I was reading something about brides choosing one vendor or another and someone wrote that the more you know about their service before meeting the better. I agree.

This past weekend I met with a couple to discuss possibly photographing their wedding and was very impressed at how well they understood the ins and outs of choosing a wedding photographer. They had read a lot and met with the photographers that I consider to be the cream of the crop in Canada: a few of my friends. So, when they decided to engage my services I was thrilled and honoured. So, thank-you.

All the World

Hi -

There is usually a pretty steep discrepency between aspiration and achievement - we want, we think, imagine, dream and plan - and then there is what we do, see and achieve. The things I wanted to do and people I wanted to meet and the world unfolds.

The great dichotomous serendipity is that we achieve by chance and often love by accident. What could be more pleasurable than the lucid dream of life.

Photographs - my friend says photograph and I say picture in a self-deprecating way. Pictures are what friends take and ... photographs - that word lends more to the image. The voice in my head says that I photograph - the verb - a random conveyance by purposeful design.

Here is a photograph - these women - each of them wonderful.

It Has Been a While....

Sorry for the delay. I have been wrapped inside of a bunch of things - selling a house, moving, relocation of the studio and work, work work which is code for fun, fun, fun...

Liz and Al were married a few weeks ago - I was in attendance with camera and captured this easy smiling woman and a terrific man in a fabulous church.

Here are some pictures...

People and Things You Dare Not Say

A lot of what I do I hang on to for a while - some people I meet I let go of almost immediately. Some are in the middle. Anyone who has ever done something really silly may commiserate.

This past several weeks has been very busy - people all across Canada in need of having their picture taken by me. And, there are exciting weddings coming up.

Rural Peace

Hi -

I love rural life. A slow drive through winding tree lined roads with farms and fields before you and a clear blue-grey sky. Some of the most interesting people I ever meet are on these roads. Early morning or late evening - the work ever stops for the small Canadian farmer.

Here is a man - and his grandson.

Artistic what....?

Hi -

A photgrapher was explaining to me that he does not 'shoot flower girls dancing at the wedding' because it is beneath his artistic integrity. Huh? Makes no sense to me - my first wedding was in 1972 and I was the ring bearer and dancing with the flower girl was loads of fun. Yes, I take pictures of flower girls dancing:)

Vintage - grows more valuable....

Here is Dave - my dad's older brother. What a guy - he passed on in 1979 and before that we were pretty close. This is one of two or three pics I have of him. Simple - and I wish there were more.

Cowboys...

Ya walk along and some days are happier than others - no two ways about that. But, nothing like a day spent with my pal Duncan and his 3 beautiful girls at the farm. Cowboys - they like smoky old pool rooms and cool mountain mornings...

Uplifting times and borrowed youth.

Weekend Update - minus SNL

The past week was fun - Thursday in particular. I met up with Kristina and Nik for a tour of the Niagara region and some photos. Well, the tour was impromptu but the photos were intended. The drive was a bit longer than I anticipated and when Kristina asked me if I was hungry on arrival ... starving, ravenous. Thanks:)

Then there was the bike race....

World's Greatest Garage Band plays CNIB

Mike and Joanne are married. Maybe peptide bonds are ionic - who knew? Covalency can exist at both ends of a long chain molecule and intractable problems are at least worthy of pursuit.

Here was attraction based in fate and universal mystery - Joanne: beautiful far past the obvious - Mike: handsome and amazed.

Terrific food: Massimo and his team from Mistura are fantastic. Four Big (really big) Screens displaying a very well crafted slideshow of two beautiful lives. It was emotional for me and I tried my best and Keri rose to the occasion.

Here are a few samples:)

Weekend Sunshine Fun... John and Melanie

Blue, blue sky... A terrific crowd and a fine setting.

Melanie and John were married this weekend at the Elmhurst Resort and Spa just west of Toronto. I had a lot of fun - the bride and groom were very gracious in their hospitality and provided great entertainment and an emotion filled day.

John is a very accomplished musician and accompanied himself on the piano as he sang a song Melani had written - this was truly their song. Her sister sat close for emotional support as Melanie was overwhelmed by the pure love of the moment.

Thanks Melanie and John - I truly appreciate being a part of your wedding day.

Wildly Beautiful

My wife is gorgeous.

Rocket Science

So - I used to wanna be a rocket scientist - kids have the wildest ideas. Careers - what a tangled path we lead - I used to really admire people who studied hard in school - head in books: organized notes: neat handwriting - the whole bit. Education - definitely worth the effort.

A Nice Conversation - family photos

I was trading a couple of emails with Time Forbes who is a very good (excellent really) photographer from Kingston, Ontario. I like Tim's work quite a lot and he seems to be contiinually pushing the envelope in pursuit of better and bettter images. (I like to think I do the same - hang out some time and decide for yourself)

He originally wrote - 'I still would love to 2nd shoot for you some time (or 3rd shoot even) if you're game ... I would just like to see how you work and get those wicked formals where it's posed but doesn't look staid and boring."

This is something I cannot explain and in truth have no idea how it works out - but it usually 'works out' - this is a common comment I get from clients, photographers and my magazine editors. I think the camera know's who is clicking the shutter and the subjects usually (almost always - no, in truth basically always) rise to the occasioon and things just kind of work out.

Scenery and Placid Places

New Brunswick - a lovely province.

The new double lane highway has made the trip through New Brunswick very fast but this place deserves a slow ride along back roads. My father suggested I visit St. George and here it is - well worth the trip and the afternoon.

This bridge and mill still produce electricity for the town and province.

Sisters

Grace and I stopped off in Calgary on our way back from Vancouver and visited with my brother and his wife and 3 great kids. A stop at the local amusement park was in order and I was being kind of dorky getting photos of the kids for my parents - the grandparents.

Peaceful Days

My wife and I are taking a couple of days to charge our inner batteries and become more acquainted with nature. It is nice to sleep to the sound of an ocean sighing with insects purring softly in the background - a look out the window and bright shiny stars reassure the mind.

Days like this make one wonder why the world is not peaceful for everyone.

(here is a snapshot - a rainforest stand of tall trees: a semi-ironic grove that a logging company has decided to display as an example of how conserving they are. Truth is: they cut 99.9% of the forest and left this as a park with their name on it. A testament to greed and short sighted indulgence.)

Sam and Christine...

This is Sam and Christine. It is now kind of late and maybe bed is a good option - but I wanted to make sure that this simple portrait met the expectation of my imagination. A lovely couple and a very calm setting. West coast of Canada - I like it.

Bone Tired and feeling good

Sometimes fatigue gets the better of you. Today, I was moving refrigerators and let me tell you - they are heavy. We even had to take the food out of one to manage it through the door.

Here is yours truly - this is from the point of view of the people being photographed and me happily at work. That shirt sometimes comes loose and we were in the middle of a busy sidewalk and the images are simply lovely - even if I say so myself but the beautiful bride sure made my day a thrill.

Days in Cape Breton

Hi - I have been away from Toronto for a few days - I moved some stuff to the back burner (sorry) and took a drive to see my parents and home town. Thanks to my wife for undertanding my desire. She is super supportive.

The drive was fun - we have a new Jetta TDI and the fuel economy is almost unnerving. 1100KMs. between fillls on the highway. East of Montreal and along the St. Lawrence river is some really fantastic scenery and friendly people, fine restaurants and an all aroind nice time. Anyone considering destinations for a honeymoon should consider the Eastern Townships Quebec.

I will be back in Toronto on Sunday before leaving for a week on the west coast shooting a Vancouver Island wedding and some portraits in Calgary.

Here is mom and dad.

A Terrific Group

The past wekend was a lot of fun with some serious moments thrown in.... Hayley and Mark were married and I was lucky enough to be there for the photos - great atmosphere and loads of family support.

Every time I see a family like this I miss my own and want to drag my wife down the aisle again just for the fun.

Hayley was lovely and Mark was obviously in awe at his good fortune.

Sticker Shock

My wife and I were in a tad rush so we stopped into the new Burger Shoppe in my neighborhood - I ordered, she sat - 2 burgers, 2 fries, 2 drinks - the guy said: $26.45 please.... I said - Holy ####### ....

The guy said - that is how much it is everywhere.

The burgers were good but I was wondering what life this guy leads that burgers cost that much at every serve yourself place he visits...

OH well.....

Here is a picture that kind of defines my usual frame of mind - my Grandmother bought my brother a bike. She likely had to work for months to save. When I photograph your wedding or your children I think of my Grandmother and kind of assume that everyone works as hard as she did and I had better do a good job.

Have High Standards

Your wedding is a special occasion for you and loads of other people. There is a better than average chance that a lot of your guests will purchase a new outfit and get their hair done specifically to attend. You have planned and agonized over the details and want everyone to have a terrific time: you are looking forward to a celebration of unity, family and love.

This may be the first or only time you ever hire a photographer. It breaks my heart to see someone’s wedding pictures that were obviously taken in a half-hearted attempt by some weekend warrior lacking the experience, talent or equipment to bring justice to the effort that went into the other aspects of the wedding.

Horror stories – couples never getting their photos; receiving poorly composed and executed images of poor resolution on an unreadable CD. Cameras breaking, cars failing to start, brutal on-camera flash pictures of point and shoot quality from the so-called professional.

Be careful with your day: respect the effort you put into the planning, décor and emotion – hire a trustworthy photographer whose work connects you to the day. Examine the portfolio carefully and ask yourself – do these images make me feel as if I were there?

There are a few photographers whose work I admire in the Greater Toronto Area – one guy is Andreas Avdoulos. His work is outstanding and we have a mutual respect. Last weekend I helped out and captured some images at a great wedding Andreas was photographing.

Rest assured – with Me or Andreas or both of us on the task – your wedding images will convey the elegance, love and glamour of the day. Click here for Andreas' work.

The World, That Stage and The Dad

If you are going to have a weddding you will have a cast of characters moving in and out of the day and offering help and advice and glasses of water at opportune moments. The father of the bride is one person that always fascinates me. Wonder what they are thinking.

Here is Mr. Mauro.

Then there is the groom - no matter rich or poor or old or young - always amazed that this woman has agreed to spend a lifetime: I know I was amazed when Grace said I do.

Even More Radiant Than Expected...

Wow, a lovely day. I missed the ceremony - ouside getting ready for the post-ceremony portraits - but here she is on the way into the Eglinton Grand - terrific.

A Beautiful Woman

Tonight I stopped by the rehearsal of the wedding I will be photographing this weekend. I spent the rehearsal thinking of the photos that I will attempt on the day and how the family and friends will enjoy the experience and the fun I hope to have.

My task is to help my friend Andreas by capturing the portraits - bride, groom, family and wedding party .... including a two very large dogs. I like portraits with dogs.

Here is a quick pic - she was thinking of something and I was thinking how terrific she will look on the day.

Vain, Naive, Covetous, Practical???

Alright - I need (want) a new car. My wife agrees and after a lot of shopping around have found the one that makes sense ... at least as much sense as a car can make anyway. We are getting a Jetta TDI - wooohoo.

I drive a lot each year for work and we like car trips a lot and the 5.8 l/100kms. of the Jetta Diesel is super attractive.

We owe a debt of gratitude to our Honda Civic which is now at a new home after 300K kilometers.

The Whole Crowd

Here is a try at getting the entire contingent of wedding party and guests in one compelling image. It was getting very dark and the speeches were rolling and the folk were crowded around .... we set one huge light and made a few photos - the groom was egging me on as I was using the PA system to egg everyone else onn - tthen, I jumped off of the stairs and snapped this one.

I really like it. Hope you do as well.

Upcoming Show of a Sort

Hi, my favourite coffee shop - Jet Fuel - is having the 1th anniversary party this Sundaya nd for the month of April there is a group exhibit. There will be 15 video displays each running a short movie in roast of the owner - Johnny Jet.

Massive Change

OK - Bruce Mau is some kind of massive change proponent and it is time for me to do one. I need a new website - well, two new sites actually and they are now in the works. I have a hard time trusting people with certain things and my website is one of those things.

Kostas is my designer and he is doing a fine job so far. I am excited and hopefully you will like the results - check back and in about a week - everything changes.

Something I Really Enjoy

I like slideshows with music. Most people do I figure but I am obsessed and can watch them over and over. One part I really like is selecting the music to accompany the selection of images in the show. Really fun.

Icons and Misfits

One kind of neat thing about my job is the super cool people I get to meet. Truth is though - I think most people are super cool unless they are mean or bullies so maybe my rose coloured glasses work to my advantage.

Anyway - this morning I was photographing a super cool Canadian Icon - Nicholas Campbell (aka Dominic DaVinci)

All the best - B

Oprah, Johnny and Gail

OK - I have a tv in my studio and when I am editing some photos or doing some business the TV is occasionally on in the background. Today - Oprah and her friend Gail are on a car trip across the US.

Lately, I have liked Oprah (her and not the show) a bit more because of her South African work and also because she is getting off of the fence and supporting Obama for president. But, the semi-candid segments of her on that car trip has opened my eyes again. She can shill with the best and that is the main focus - sell, sell, sell....

Unabashed self-promotion. Yippee.

Here is a more local celebrity. Johnny from the Jet. Jet Fuel coffee rules and here is John. Would you buy a coffee from this man?

Time and Regret

A while back - 15 years - I was supposed to attend the wedding of a good friend and did not make it. I absconded on a yacht to Barbados on very short notice. We have not spoken since and it bothers me. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable thing to do at the time and it should not have affected our friendship to that extent.

In this modern age I should just call the guy up and apologize. If someone invites you to their wedding - you should attend.

Cats and Books in the Sun

We are in Florida and having a great time. Grace and I visited Key West and made a point of seeing Ernest Hemingway's residence. Grace because she likes cats an awful lot and me because I like Morley Callaghan. Callaghan was a friend of Hemingway in Paris and Toronto and after a while they had a falling out. This happens to a lot of friendships but the letters produced by this literary rift made for some exciting reading 60 years later.

Recently (well, I call 20 months recent) I photographed Darcy and Taissa's wedding. Darcy's uncle gave a short talk and reading during the service and as I listened I realized that this was no ordinary talk. He was reading from letters traded between Hemingway and Morley Callaghan (Darcy's grandfather) on the topic of love and friendship. This was a fantastic experience and a great honour. The words are still in my imagination.

Our Florida Vacation

My wife (Grace) and I are heading for the Florida Keys. The scenery from ground level is a luxury I enjoy - the local faces and the changing accents make a road trip into a contimuum of humanity and kind of reinforces that we all like the same things - friends, family and warm days.

Here is a lovely women whose son finished high schol at 17 years old and could not afford college or find a job - so, off to Iraq.

Walking on the bech is the best - here is Grace at Hilton Head in South Carolina.

Today, I Serve You...

Life is a covenant binding generation to generation and the rituals we observe make that bond stronger. Watching a son and daughter pass into marriage is a hopeful and gratifying day as that cycle of life and lineage will continue.

This past weekend I was watching a Chinese Tea Ceremony and thinking how beautiful it was and the words really started to resonate with me. "Today, I Serve You..." A thanks and acknowledgment to parents, siblings and relations for holding us up in the struggle through life and a few minutes to think how difficult some of those days may have been and how truly worthwhile every effort has become.

The closer and more quietly I observe the struggle we wage through life for our loved ones the more loudly I want to scream and the more tightly I want to hold on. Life, love and time together - more mysterious and valuable than one can express.

Today, I serve you.

One Job

Today is Valentine's day. Makes me think of marriage and weddings and what is important. If you are a man marrying - you are signing up for one job - love your wife. It is that simple - love her now and love her forever.

After the glitter fades and the shine leaves the wedding band - keep loving your wife - every day. Nothing fancy and nothing loud - just love her always. That is the job and it is easy a job as one could ever have and as difficult a task as there may be.

Here is my dad and here is my mom and if you want to understand real love - spend some time with them.

Valentine's

Kind of silly and I am a huge secularist. Still, you do not know love until you hit the long strokes: life, kids, poorer, richer, sickness, health - several years and one or two disappointments. They are there and you are still loving - like a verb. The middle field and the end game of love is the truest part. The new is fun and the very new is thrilling but the true taste comes with the old and the borrowed youth of age.

Here is love.

Black and White Evening

Black and white images provide mute reminder of great emotion - family reminiscences and devotion to last a lifetime. This late fall wedding was held at the beautiful Tamahawk Club in Ancaster near Hamilton - tthe grounds had mmany wild deer running about and watching the ceremony.

Summer On the Way

Summer is coming - believe it or not - and with it those great summer weddings. Here is a great nuptial from the Aberfoyle Mill near Gueph, Ontario. My assistant and I were talking about this wedding the other day and we both commented how great the time was that because everywhere you turned there was something fun happening - from blowing bubbles to a spontaneous sing song by the groom's pals.

Terrific food - the bride is a renowned food stylist and the groom a wel known chef - great flowers, lovely Lowen Pope dress and the best Elvis I have ever seen.

One of My Favourites

I like family portraits an awful lot. A great family photo shows the interaction and love between the family mambers and leaves the viewer with some sense of what the people are feeling at that moment. Sometimes the photos are dramatic and sometimes fun. This one is fun.

Super and Natural Family

These are a couple of shots from the past few years photographing a family north of Toronto - they have been among my favourite subjects and we always come away with some photos that I really like and for sure we all have a great time.

This is one of the services I offer - a day, morning or afternoon of hanging out and photos. Making portraits can be a super time - when things are fun and natural kids grow more beautiful. Drop me a line or email and let's make a plan to have fun with your family and kids.

The Young and the Young

Growing old is a kind of treat that life rewards the virtuous. Seeing our grandchildren marry and the tremendous honour of new additions to our family - these things really come to heart at weddings. I love watching children and parents and grandparents bathed in the love of a shared life. Really great times.

The Prize

My wife is fantastic. Every day I thank my lucky stars that I wake up next to her and almost have to pinch myself. When I photograph a wedding my wife and the great fun we share are always on my mind and I wish this for every couple I meet.

Simple Beauty

This is Molly. A simple and beautiful portrait - every bride should have a few very simple photographs showing how beautiful she really is - no intrusions, no distractions, no compications - simple beauty.

Elegant Black and White

Black and White is perfect for capturing some aspects of a wedding day.... It can be gentle and works very well quietly in subdued light. Black and white film has a great tactile appeal.

Here is a series of three of my favourite black and white images from an evening Vancouver wedding lit only by candle.

Terrific Groups

When you have terrific guests and a fantastic venue a fun and lively group photo of all the guests can really leave a strong sense of the day. This is one photograph that we always try and capture and everyone winds up having a good time.

These make a fantastic thank-you card image.

Thrill for a Lifetime

A few minutes of great fun will form memories that last a lifetime. This flower girl was thrilled beyond words to be at her aunt’s wedding and jumping on the bed was a natural reaction.

If you are being married in 2007 I still have a few dates left and would be happy to sit down and discuss your plans and vision.

Kids – fantastic,

Children - really great...

The great thing about children is their enthusiasm and innocence and the world of possibility that lies before them. Every child is brilliant and with some careful listening we can tune into some of that brilliance and use it in our own lives.

I once naively asked my 6 year old cousin Tamara what she liked to do best.... Tamara, "I like to sleep because when I sleep, I can fly."

Terrific.

Family, Parent and Child

Lately I have been noticing that I value my family more and more with each passing day. Not that I ever felt neglected or felt a lack of love but now that I am slightly older my parents, brother, sister and various relations are all more important and in the forefront of my mind more often.

I am ecstatic that my dad always made sure we had great family photos. So, I try and encourage people I meet to have a few family portraits from each era of life.

A New Start and Confession

Hi - I have to confess that the technical aspects of blogging have left me kind of stymied and with a lot of commitments I have been remiss. My friend Andreas says it is important to keep in touch and I have to agree with him. My resolution it to try and improve on my blogging communication....

Here are some images from a very warm intimate and happy wedding a few weeks ago at The Rosedale Golf Club here in Toronto.

Great Christmas Wedding

I was very happy to photograph a beautiful winter wedding in Cheticamp, Cape Breton. The bride and groom looked fantastic and it was the funnest party I had been to in a while - square dancing into the very early hours.
